01 · The Challenge
Fabrication quoting is slow and error prone because every job varies by material grade, plate thickness, weld process, dimensions, load rating, and finish. Estimators price from drawings by hand, so quotes take days, weld and joint choices are inconsistent, and an accepted job is re-keyed into cutting lists and bills of material with room for costly mistakes.

02 · Our Approach
We built a rule based CPQ inside Odoo that encodes the fabrication logic estimators already work to, so a valid, priced, standards aware quote is produced from guided inputs and flows straight into cutting and production.
- Modeled products by structure type, such as frames, platforms, enclosures, and skids
- Encoded material grade and plate thickness rules against span and load rating
- Set weld process and joint preparation options aligned to AWS D1.1 and ISO 3834 practice
- Added finish rules for galvanizing, powder coat, and painting by environment
- Connected accepted quotes to auto generated cut lists, BOMs, and manufacturing orders
03 · Solution Delivered
Material and Thickness Rules
Steel grade and plate thickness bounded to the span and load rating of the structure, so an under specified section cannot be quoted.
Weld and Joint Configuration
Weld process (MIG, TIG, arc) and joint preparation constrained to the material and thickness, aligned to AWS D1.1 and ISO 3834 practice.
Dimension and Load Logic
Length, width, height, and load capacity checked together so only physically valid structures reach a quote.
Finish and Coating Rules
Galvanizing, powder coat, or paint selected by service environment, priced by surface area automatically.
Component and Hardware Pricing
Plates, sections, fasteners, and bought-out parts priced at component level and rolled into the quote.
Auto Cut List and BOM
An accepted quote generates the cut list, bill of materials, and manufacturing order in Odoo, carrying every parameter to the shop floor.
Why It Worked
The configurator encoded the same material, weld, and load logic the estimators already applied, so sales could produce a buildable, standards aware quote in minutes instead of days. Tying the accepted quote to an automatic cut list and bill of materials meant the shop floor built exactly what was quoted, with no re-keying and no drift between sales and production.
